One Church was formed for the purpose of bringing the various parts of the Body of Christ in our communities together in order to bring the unchurched in our communities into meaningful relationships with the Church. This "togetherness" needs to be more than merely attending services or events at the same time, but coming together in caring relationships. We desire to experience the Kingdom of God present in our communities as well as to bring the Kingdom to our communities. Our hope is that as we work to build relationship-bridges the walls that separate us, that isolate us, will come down.
The area I will be initially targeting for community transformation is the Virginia Peninsula which is part of the the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. We are well known for being a great vacation destination with Williamsburg to our north and Virginia Beach to our south. We are also at the center of a large military community with every branch of our military represented as well as many other governmental agencies. This area has a wonderful diversity of people living in and traveling in and out of from around the world. I believe this adds to the generally open and welcoming nature of the people here. This also offers the Church a tremendous opportunity to not only bring transformation to our communities but to send those trained in the ABCD methods all over the world.
It has been exciting to learn about the Asset Based Community Development approach to community transformation. Through the numerous ministerial, church and community relationships, as well as the professional helping organizations and institutions I have worked with over the years, I have developed a solid core of relationships to build upon. ABCD is equipping me with the framework needed to invite those I have known and have worked with for years into this exciting method of tangible community development.
