Wendy McCaig
I grew up completely un-churched in the heart of the Bible belt. I know what it feels like to be on the outside of the church walls – cut off and separated from the body of Christ. Though I spent nearly ten years in leadership roles within the institutional church, God has called me to help the Church move beyond its own walls and live more fully into its call to be the hope of the world. I am blessed to have started Embrace Richmond and to have authored my first book, “From the Sanctuary to the Streets.”
Embrace Richmond grew out of a Homeless Woman’s desire to give back. Since its inception we have been unlocking the gifts and unleashing the passion of under-resourced people and communities. We do this through our grass-roots organizing efforts in some of Richmond’s most under-resourced communities and through our partnerships and coaching relationships with congregations across the city of Richmond, Virginia.
It is our belief that even in the abandoned places of our cities, God leaves a remnant. It is the role of the church to find those saints and equip and empower them to do the works of service they feel called to do. Embrace Richmond is dedicated to helping the church go from the sanctuary to the streets and in so doing, transform the streets into sanctuaries for those who would never step foot in a church building.
We utilize an Asset Based Community Development approach in our work and train other faith communities, community leaders, and non-profit organizations to utilize these same principles in their local context.
